Feminist film critic Laura Mulvey challenged film theory with her 1975 analysis of classical narrative cinema entitled “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema.” In 1977, Mulvey, in collaboration with Peter Wollen, created a film that personified her theory as it challenged the psychoanalytic theories of Jacques Lacan. The film, Riddles of the Sphinx, is a journey for one woman out of the non‐symbolic world that she shares with her child into the symbolic world of the dominant discourse. In the film, Mulvey and Wollen undo the Look of the classical cinematic apparatus that renders woman object as they redo the use of language to create a new filmic text. Is this new discourse another puzzle, or does it provide a password to understanding women's relationship to the dominant order? The essay considers the possibilities
