A reader‐response reading of Robert Frost's “Home Burial”

The search for the proper reading of a text has resulted in a tunnel‐vision approach to analyzing literature, which has been particularly damaging to women characters, who are depicted as frail, emotional, and, worst of all, insane. All of the women in Robert Frost's woman/man dialogue poems have suffered at the hands of critics looking for the one, correct reading. Reader‐response criticism acts as a corrective to this approach, and, as demonstrated by a reader‐response analysis of Amy in Frost's “Home Burial,” it accepts simultaneously those readings that are uniquely personal and those that are shared by a larger community. The key to multiple readings is identity, as described by Kenneth Burke; by Norman Holland, a reader‐response critic; and by social psychologists Andrew J. Weigart, J. Smith Teitge, and Dennis W. Teitge. Together, their notions of identity allow for a variety of readings and debunk the idea that the text contains only one message
