François Delsarte (1811–1871) has long been regarded as one of the major figures in the development of modern acting, dance, and elocution, but the philosophical roots of his performance practices have gone largely unexplored by contemporary scholars. This essay resituates Delsarte's writings in the context of various mid- to late nineteenth-century occult beliefs and practices in an effort to explore how these occult impulses were featured in Delsarte's works. In this occult context, Delsarte's writings describe a communicative interchange between body, mind, and spirit that moves from pragmatic physical techniques to a more rigorous ontological-spiritual pursuit of the Divine
