Bakhtinian dialogical theory suggests a model for the sociology of visual images that focuses on the social geography of the maker of the image, the “hero” or topic of the image, and the viewer for whom the image is intended. The model is illustrated in the context of the sociology of painting with reference to three art‐historical monographs and to three artists who worked in colonial urban Quebec
