Costas Criticos and Tim Quinlan are South African ethnographic filmmakers who use community video method in their work, In this paper they report on their most recent work which documents the life of Indian Fishermen in Durban, South Africa, and the life of herders in the alpine regions of Lesotho. They explore the attraction of community video to the academic which offers the potential of a powerful means of political, cultural and philosophical expression and hence, a valuable research instrument. They are attracted to this method, which emphasizes attention to process and power in terms of demanding recognition that knowledge is constructed in ways which reflect the relationship between researcher and research subject. Costas judges his project in terms of its emancipatory potential, while Tim identifies practical problems in his work as different facets of what may be called the politics of community video
