In this article I aim to suggest that the current climate of academic publishing has allowed something fundamental to go missing from existing accounts of cultural studies, and that it has significant implications for the future of the field. I describe this 'something' as cultural studies' particular investment and commitment to scholarly practice, its sense of vocation, which is communicated through a contagious 'affect' in the forms of address adopted in its writing
