Planning regulations in Britain, in respect to archaeology, have been strengthened recently with the publication of guidelines by the Department of the Environment (PPG 16), and considerable emphasis is now placed on pre-consent assessment and evaluation of the impact of development. Geophysical survey can make a major contribution to assessment and evaluation projects and is being used increasingly to characterize archaeological sites. These techniques have further significant advantages in that they are non-invasive and can be used to locate accurately, and enhance data from, aerial photographs. This paper examines the use of geophysical techniques in the earliest days of PPG 16
