Rather than being fascinated with dark corners of the unconscious and irrational, Fritz Heider felt more comfortable in the light of reasonable thought. In this short essay, published here for the first time, Heider points out links between human attitudes and emotions, cognitive structures underlying human perception, and the structure of the external Our cognitive structures evolved by adapting to external reality, rather than as distortions of the human psyche. Heider was concerned with both sides of the isomorphism of the structure of the mind and the structure of the world. However, the underlying coordination, between the structure of human cognition, reality, and the light of reasonable thought does not mean that Heider's is a cool, serene psychology. To the contrary, warm, emotional experience was fundamental to him.
