HIV, Homophobia, and Human Rights

Ever since its discovery AIDS has been intricately linked with homosexuality. Stressing the connection between homosexuality and AIDS leads to stigmatization. Danger lurks in both stressing and denying links between homosexuality and HIV. The danger is that messages on safer sex will not be available thus more men will be at risk of infection because of unawareness of risks. In many countries especially in the developing world denial of the existence of homosexuality made it difficult for the government and community organizations to reach gay men effectively. This leads to a very limited knowledge on the extent of homosexual activity as well as HIV rate due to homosexual transmission. Despite this a handful of organizations have managed to establish outreach programs for homosexual men. The need to reach out to people at risk and the commitment of international agencies such as WHO Global Program on AIDS to community development and human rights helped foster these small groups of homosexual men. The efforts of these people have made major implications in the ways in which homosexuality is dealt within a human rights discourse
