Comparative research has to transcend differences in culture and language. We cannot simply define our own concepts and variables as the objects of comparison are socially constructed. It is therefore imperative to account for translation problems within the theory on comparative research. Theoretically we can distinguish between two ways of accomplishing a relevant comparison: by means of capturing the authentic or local meaning of social reality, or by applying our own concepts as a yardstick or meaning gauge. Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages. Researchers, however, somehow have to navigate between the two in order to secure the meaning of the comparisons made. Especially if we want to apply in practice what we perceive as desirable in another country, we must be careful with and accountable for the interpretations and translations involved
