Asian Americans and Politics: Perspectives, Experiences, Prospects, is an important and accessible contribution to the growing literature on Asian American political participation. Edited by historian Gordon H. Chang, the book brings together fifteen essays on Asian American politics, most of which were originally presented at a conference sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Spring 1998. The essays emerge from a wide array of academic disciplines including political science, sociology, psychology, history, and law, and cover topics ranging from race theory to electoral behavior to ethnic group politics. Several of the essays present themes familiar to Asian American studies: the demographic growth of the different Asian American communities; the treatment of Asian Americans as perpetual foreigners; and, the increasing importance of new immigrant populations. Some essays present some of the latest empirical data on Asian American political activity, while others provide insight into populations often neglected in political literature, such as families and youth. The book can serve as a useful introduction for newcomers to Asian American politics, as well as a resource for more focused analyses of identity politics and political behavior
