AbstractThe objective of this ex post facto study was to test the relationship between different motives to practice sport, perceived competence, self-perceived image and some healthy life styles like rate of exercise and nutrition. The sample comprised 282 adolescent students aged 15 to 20 years, responding to different questionnaires evaluating the above study variables. The results of correlation analysis showed that physical activity and self-perceived image positively and significantly correlated with perceived competence and healthy eating habits, while the latter two variables correlated positively with all variables. The competition motive was positively and significantly correlated with both rate of exercise and nutrition as well as with perception of competence and self-perceived image. There were also positive relationships between perceived competence and perceived image with all the other motives. The study also shows the importance that sex seems to have on students' motives for practising sport, attributing to girls an improvement of their self-image and weight loss, and to boys competition, fun and fitness maintenance. We discuss the value of these results in the design and planning of public health prevention programmes.Palabras clave: Saludautoconcepto físicosexodeportemotivaciónKeywords: Healthphysical self-conceptsexsportmotivation
