AbstractA research study was carried out to analyse the new kind of parasocial relationships maintained by adolescents and youths in Tenerife (Canary Islands) through chats. For this purpose, 25 Psychopedagogy students of both sexes were trained on the use of the net in order to carry out a semi-directed interview, which included: Net use habits, displaced activities, virtual and real contacts, and different identities adopted. A total of 206 interviews were obtained through direct contacts in chats. The data were analysed both qualitative and quantitatively. It is understood that the subjects are virtual subjects, with no proof of their identity. The results show that the net is used mainly for social purposes, such as, to receive support, advice, or establish new relationships. In spite of the anonimity, subjects usually reported not changing their personal or sexual identity and being sincere. No differences between males and females were found, except for the male tendency to spend more time in the net and to use it, more so than females, for solving technical doubts on its functioning. These results lead us to meditate on the new Internet user study subject, the methodology to use, and the new phenomena of parasocial relationship inherent to this system.Palabras clave: Adolescentesjóvenesrelaciones parasocialesInternetchatsKeywords: Adolescentsyouthparasocial relationshipsInternetchats
