The article tries to challenge the established negative stereotypes of Russian Orthodox priests in the early modern period by applying the theoretical framework of “social discipline.” The latter was initially developed with regard to Western history, and must therefore be examined for its usefulness also for the Russian parish and church authorities. A central pattern to be reconsidered in this context is the “electoral principle,” according to which parishes traditionally appointed their priest themselves through election. Appropriate application of “social discipline” makes the establishment of new, and the strengthening of already existing norms since the second half of the seventeenth century visible—including a strong influence of Catholic and Uniate assessments of the period through to the incorporation of the Kievan metropolitanate. In reality, “social discipline” as a process involving also the parish autonomy in the long run leads to an improved professional profile of the parish clergy
