As part of a wider study of counselling for family carers of relatives with diverse chronic illnesses and disabilities, the researchers sought to identify the aims and counselling approaches of a relevant sample of 47 service organisations. Five broad aims, eight specific counselling approaches, and three related theoretical frameworks emerged from thematic analysis of participants’ responses. Drawing on the findings of this study, the researchers have proposed a schema for counsellors working with carers. The need for further systematic research and the implications regarding informed selection of approaches and training for counsellors are indicated
