To examine parent empowerment, 53 parents of hospitalised children were interviewed to assess their involvement in medical procedures and satisfaction with information and care. In addition, the anxiety of parents was investigated. Interviews were conducted at a paediatric hospital with the parents of children undergoing elective surgery. Examination of the data, using content analysis, revealed that parents lacked empowerment in terms of not being allowed to be present while their child was anaesthetised, being prevented from going to the recovery room soon enough to help their child as he or she regained consciousness, and having poor communication experiences with medical practitioners. In addition, parents reported high levels of anxiety. It was concluded that greater understanding by health care professionals was needed of the preferences of parents regarding their involvement in the care of their child
