In the non-fictional writings of Nishizaki (Ikuta) Hanayo, Okada Yuki, Yamada Waka and Harada Satsuki published in the magazine Seitō, love is analyzed as an essential element for self-development, and in relation to the idea of unification of spirit and flesh. This discourse is in fact influenced by the writings of Swedish feminist Ellen Key (1849-1926), translated and published by Hiratsuka Raichō in this magazine. It corresponds to a large extent to the characteristics of the discourse on love of the Taishō era, such as belief in supremacy of love and in marriage for love. The article of Ueno Yō however shows an original point of view on marriage and on the fusion of spiritual and sexual love
