One of the major developments in ethnic conflict research is the idea of transformation through grass‐roots peacebuilding. Using Northern Ireland as the main case study, this article examines how this concept could be applied to societies emerging out of protracted, violent conflict. Yet it is not always clear what level the transformation work should address. Although the article analyses proposals that concentrate on the individual and stuctural levels of transformation, special emphasis is placed on the inter‐cultural dimension of peacebuilding
