Much attention has been devoted to the ‘Third Italy'and to the Berlusconi phenomenon. The discussion often takes place within a narrative that leads from modernism to post‐modernism. But does this narrative contribute to an adequate understanding of what is happening? Enzo Mingione presents a more complex analysis in which he identifies five major routes. He emphasises not only the processes of fragmentation that are taking place but also the bases for new and hopeful forms of social integration
