This comment summarizes the papers delivered by Oliver Daddow, Patrick Finney, Charles Johnson, and Alan Munslow at the session ‘The Politics of History’ sponsored by the Theory and Historiography Network, European Social Science History Conference, Berlin, March 2004. It notes the papers' emphasis on historians' lack of theoretical self-consciousness, accepts their attribution of much of the responsibility for this to the institutional environment in which those historians function, and suggests that psychological factors—particularly of the sort William James elucidated in his celebrated discussion of the relationship between temperament and intellectual style—need to be looked at as well
