Concerns about payment of research participants include the possibility that participants will accept risks solely for payment. However, empirical data on researcher decision making about payment is scarce. This study explores Australian researcher practices regarding payment of participants in research, and consistency of practice with current guidelines. A mixed-method survey focused on researcher opinions and practices regarding payment of participants, and responses to research scenarios, was administered to Australian researchers. Researchers mainly made decisions based on the circumstances of their study and their project budget. Almost three-quarters of respondents reported not using guidelines to inform practice. Views on payment of participants were largely dependent on study circumstances but sometimes reflected stereotypical views of participants. Researcher payment practices vary and are based on professional judgement rather than guidelines. We recommend further research into why guidelines are not used and how to better shape ethical researcher practices towards payment.
