This paper examines the relationship between conservative social theory and the housing policies of the British Conservative party between 1979 and 1997. The paper defines the nature of conservative social theory, stressing its dispositional nature. The paper then considers the main themes of Conservative housing policy. In the third part of the paper, these two elements are combined to assess how far Conservative policy was conservative. The conclusions of this analysis are that significant elements of the policy were indeed conservative in their ends, but that the means chosen to achieve them were certainly not consistent with conservative social theory
