In 1991, Luc Boltanski and Laurent Th evenot published: On Justifi cation: Economies of Worth.1 Th e purpose of the book was to provide, on the basis of preliminary empirical studies, the terms of a systematic and operational description of the “regimes of action”2 of ordinary people in situations of confl ict or “dispute”.3 For if one admits that all individuals are “capable beings”,4 and that a great number of actions in which social beings are implicated aim for the reduction of disagreements, then one can consider that such a reduction raises the opportunity of “tests” (epreuves).5 In these tests, individuals “justify themselves”, that is to say, confront diverging descriptions concerning a litigious situation, action or issue.6 Such descriptions become relevant in as much as they valorize a “critical” point of view whose axiological and practical legitimacy depends on the respect of formal and actual constraints of expression. Th ese constraints defi ne the very terms of the challenge of justifi cation. In order to describe a “dispute” or a “confl ict” sociologically, one must identify and classify the main points of view with which the actors express themselves during the dispute.
