This paper traces the origins and outcomes of Mexican media investment in Central America by highlighting the activities of Angel Gonzalez, the dominant Mexican broadcaster in the region. The paper also illustrates the special linkages between Gonzalez and conservative elements in power in the region. Finally the paper details one consequence of the expansion of Mexican investment in Central America: the curtailing of free expression in some nations. To show that free expression is little valued in the emerging protodemocracies of the region, the paper focuses on the case of journalist Jose Zarco, whose program on politics in Guatemala fell foul of the special relationship between broadcaster Gonzalez and the central government. The paper examines the reaction of journalists and the journalism establishment in Central America to the suppression of free expression
