From the perspective of newsroom organisation, the development and modernisation of the Spanish press took place in the first third of the twentieth century. It coincided with the emergence of newspapers such as ABC (1903), El Debate (1910) and El Sol (1917) that became the significant models for the rest of the daily press. Despite their ideological differences, these newspapers shared a common concern that their journalists should deliver high quality work. This involved the requirement for journalists to have a broad and deep knowledge of the subjects they reported, a commitment to working in journalism on a full-time basis, and new systems of work organisation. El Debate actually founded the first school of journalism in Spain in 1926. The physical space occupied by newsrooms became greater over the years, reflecting changing ways of organising the different editorial areas and of managing modern newspapers. The gradual improvement in labour conditions and the incorporation of new technologies helped to create more coordinated structures to facilitate relationships between editors and journalists
