The history of sports is a generally neglected field in Turkish historiography. Consequently, the history of football has been examined in a superficial and populist way, and has not been the subject of any comprehensive academic study in the real sense. An interest in the history of football as the most popular sport in Turkey has emerged as a result of some developments and achievements in recent years. However, no detailed study has been undertaken to reveal how this sport was introduced into the country, how it became popular, and the stages of its early development. The aim of this article is to explain how football entered Turkey, and to examine early writing on the game. The article consists of two parts. The first part draws on a number of the earliest publications on football in Turkey to examine how the game entered the Ottoman society during a period of modernization (1890-1914). In the second part, the earliest publications on football in this society, namely the journal Futbol and books by Selim Sirri Tarcan and the Istanbul Futbol Birligi (Istanbul Soccer Association), as well as early press coverage, are reviewed and their significance in encouraging the spread of the game is assessed
