Since gaining political independence in 1965, The Gambia's foreign policy was driven by two inter‐related objectives. The first was the desire to maintain territorial sovereignty, and the second had to do with attracting external economic resources. A pro‐Western foreign policy under Jawara (1965–94), enabled his regime to extract considerable financial assistance from the West. With Western‐imposed sanctions following the 1994 coup, The Gambia's foreign policy became remarkably assertive and succeeded in attracting needed funds from alternative Western sources abroad, but not enough to overcome The Gambia's current economic downturn. Jammeh's commitment to human rights and democratic principles will be the basis upon which Western aid and support will be fully resumed and continued
