Bringing Susan Strange Back In (again)

This volume brings together a group of scholars who, I believe, all had personal relationships with Susan Strange during her life and, as such, can interpret the nuances of her work. In his introduction, Randall Germain, as editor and initiator of the project, suggests the volume will deliver three crucial impressions of Susan Strange's work. First, her view of (structural) power in IPE was novel in its pluralism and permissive of interchange(s) with other approaches; as such, her approach is a fruitful terrain over which discussion of power in IPE can range. Second, and leading on from this point, her approach was positively multidisciplinary and open to influence and interaction from a wide range of analyses. Lastly, Germain also suggests we should take from Strange's work optimism about the discipline of IPE, about the possibilities of intellectual enquiry, and, perhaps most strikingly, a political optimism about the contemporary human condition. The question is, therefore, do the contributors deliver on this promise
