How is religion reported in the Hindu‐majority country of Nepal? Is there a relationship between the type of religion portrayed and the ways religion is covered in the television news? To answer these questions a content analysis of Nepal TV evening newscasts was conducted to examine religious representations. The results suggest relatively infrequent presentation of religion in the news, but what is being shown is overwhelmingly Hindu and presents Nepal as a homogenous religious population. Religion was primarily discussed in the context of entertainment; there was no perceptible difference in representations of gender in video footage of stories of religion and caste; and ethnic groups were hardly mentioned. This study provides some insight into the ways religious minorities are defined in Nepali society and elucidates their second‐class status within a Hindu‐dominated hierarchical cultural structure
