‘Small Wars’ often have had major consequences in the politics and societies of the West. Apparently minor military involvements in the non-European world are productive of political and cultural crises back home. Western identities and self-conceptions are centrally implicated in ‘small wars’, including notions of Western strength, rationality, and political obligations towards ‘backward’ non-European peoples. These ‘Orientalist’ identities contribute to the misconception of Western opponents in ‘small wars’, setting the stage for military reverse or even defeat, and hence for political and cultural crisis back in the metropole. This paper explores these themes with reference to US involvement in Korea and Iraq.
