Among the many legacies of the Enlightenment and Romanticism in Spain was an increased interest in history and historical subjects, amply on display in plays written by Montiano, Cadalso, Moratín, Gálvez de Cabrera and others. This study analyses the representation of well-known and highly respected Spanish painters in several dramas (by Vega, Eguilaz and Larra, García y Santisteban, and Salas y Quiroga), performed and published in Madrid during the middle years of the nineteenth century (1840–1858)
