Rodo’s Ariel (1900) launched a self-reflexive literary inquiry into Latin American specificity in contrast to the decadent West, which resonated throughout the entire century with the literati. This tendency, corollary to Americanism, sought to illuminate American themes, lauding the spectacular natural features of the continent as much as the distinctive history and ethnic/racial character of Latin America as basis for cultural sovereignty. At the threshold of political independence from the lingering colonial Spanish rule, Latin American writers articulated their identity vis-a-vis the changed world order, post Spanish American War. In his essay, Rodo incited optimism and a sense of commitment to change in the younger generation regarding the role Spanish America could play. Furthermore, positing the region as a site of future eminence, Ariel (spiritual incarnation of Hispanic America) epitomized the liberated, aesthetic hub of creation that countered a material, decadent, and imperialist northern paradigm
