In June 1956, after an extensive search, Edmund Leach was offered the Chair of Anthropology at the Australian National University. Leach was brought to Canberra and wooed but he declined to accept the appointment. Contemporaries were never quite sure why Leach turned down his first offer of a chair. Recourse to institutional and personal papers reveals that family impediments rather than professional misgivings ensured that Leach would not take up the offer
