Journal Article Civil War, Custom and Cassese Get access Jean-Marie Henckaerts Jean-Marie Henckaerts * * Jean-Marie Henckaerts, LL.M., S.J.D., is a Legal Adviser in the Legal Division of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). He was head of the ICRC’s project on customary international humanitarian law (2000–2010) and is currently heading the ICRC’s project to update the commentaries on the 1949 Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols of 1977. This contribution is based on a presentation on synergies between the ICTY case law and the ICRC study on customary international humanitarian law given at the ICTY Global Legacy Conference, The Hague, 15–16 November 2011, shortly after the untimely death of Antonio Cassese. The views expressed in this article are those of the author alone and do not necessarily reflect those of the ICRC.
