Students continue to graduate from social work programs with their negative attitudes and uneasy feelings about gays and lesbians eroded but still intact. The AIDS phenomenon has heightened their awareness but also their anxiety. Hoffman, Fierstein, and Kramer wrote AIDS plays early in the epidemic's history, and their voices, translated through their all-too-human fictional characters, speak out loud about living, loving, and dying. Structured classroom readings and discussions of these dramas challenge stereotypes of the Other, humanize personal and political struggles, and propel students to re-examine their own values and fears
