The work of London-based photographic duo Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin animates and challenges the orthodoxies, traditions and stabilities of documentary photography. Uncomfortable with what they in 2008 identified as the “dubious relationship between photography and reality”, they have increasingly placed deliberation and reflexivity at the center of their collaborative photographic practice. This essay focuses on their recent work To Photograph the Details of a Dark Horse in Low Light (2012–2013), a multi-format research and exhibition project framed by the proposition that racial prejudice is coded into the invisible chemistry of the photographic medium. Diffuse, fragmentary and open-ended, the project highlights Broomberg and Chanarin’s particular brand of elliptical criticality that critiques traditional documentary practices. The essay discusses this critique in the context of their own earlier practice, in particular during their joint editorship of Colors magazine, an influential Italian photo-led reportage magazine co-founded in 1991 by advertising photographer Oliviero Toscani with the financial support of the Benetton clothing brand
