This article studies the effect of Doña Petrona’s cookbooks on middle class Argentine housewives in the middle of the twentieth century. Doña Petrona is by far the most popular writer of cookbooks in Argentina. Her work has influenced the ways that Argentines purchase food, prepare food and consume it. Far from what popular perceptions about the Argentine diet tell us, about the large amounts of pasta and grilled meats Argentines are purported to consume, these texts give us glimpses into the rich and varied diets of the growing Argentine middle classes in the middle of the twentieth century. The article explores the way Doña Petrona encouraged Argentine women to experiment with different ingredients and techniques. This paper also studies the way that the growth of the Argentine food industry influenced Doña Petrona’s cookbooks and therefore the way that Argentine housewives prepared the daily meals. I also look at the way Doña Petrona constructed ideas about gender and how those ideas influenced food preparation. I argue that Doña Petrona’s influence on the Argentine domestic sphere shaped the way that Argentine women viewed themselves and their society: as modern and sophisticated
