This new book by St. Petersburg sociologists translates the concept of a small homeland, which is popular in journalism, local history and pedagogy, into a sociological category, which provides an impetus for methodological reflections on its heuristic potential. The authors choose phenomenology as one of the possible and most obvious perspectives that logically stem from the established practice of using this category. However its potential could be expanded if we proceed from the logic of the activity-constructivist approach, focusing on how the phenomena of consciousness shape social practices, generate configurations of flows and status positions as elements of the social structure. In this case the place defined by the individual as a small homeland acquires the power of not only spiritual, but also social attraction, influencing the trajectories of his movement in space and investment in the place that has received such a status
