Since Chambliss’ ground-breaking Presidential Address to the American Society of Criminology in 1988, studies of what he originally called “state-organised crime” have developed into a criminological field of research in their own right. This in turn has stimulated a wider interdisciplinary debate on how to tackle one of the most serious forms of deviance, which on the one hand victimises millions of people worldwide and on the other hand is difficult to understand through the lens of conventional crime committed by individuals. Recently, international lawyers have shown a renewed interest in engaging in this debate. Against this background, this article aims to introduce the current state of the conceptual debate on state-organised crime in criminology in order to identify relevant links to international law. It concludes with a proposal that may reflect a common denominator and thus be helpful for the further cross-fertilisation of research on this important topic
