The article begins by examining a type of question-formation that equates to the English ‘can it really be the case that X?’ and presents an analysis of the same. It then moves on to consider a particular usage by Abkhaz of its reflexive construction to build a structure that translates a dynamic passive in languages that have the kind of clearly differentiated diathetical opposition active: passive, which Abkhaz lacks. Consideration of one specific example leads to speculation about what might have caused the long-standing puzzle of the unmotivated presence of the x-agreement-prefix attested in the oldest manuscripts of Georgian (viz. those from the khanmet’i-era )
