In Israel, as in much of the world, the backtracking trend has grown significantly since its first appearance in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The research discussed in this article tested the relationship between backpacking and adaptation to the workforce as a reflection of the concept of leisure during emerging adulthood specifically examining two issues: (1) The change in the concept of leisure as an activity which requires an investment of time and/or effort and with inherent value. (2) The influence of the backtracking trip on young adults adjusting to the work force. Surprisingly, and contrary to the study’s hypothesis, the experimental group’s adjustment to the work force was not significantly different than that of the control group. It appears that Israeli backpackers actually maintain many aspects of their Israeli culture and Jewish religion during their long trip, which may help explain why their trip does not provide them with greater adaptation skills. This may help explain the findings of this research
