This article focuses on the relationship between Egyptian Moslem mothers' perceived social position (gender, religion and social class) and their leisure activities. It discusses these women's experiences of leisure constraints and their negotiation strategies to overcome these obstacles. The study is based on semi-structured qualitative interviews with 20 Moslem mothers who were stratified into upper, middle and lower social classes. It will be argued that (a) mothers' social class determines their access to leisure resources and their ability to negotiate some constraints (b) gender position influences their perception of constraints and negotiation strategy (c) religious position shapes the way they spend their leisure time and negotiate gender-related constraints. It also became apparent that the mothers' social, gender and religious position were highly dynamic and interdependent
