Expelled from the Spanish kingdoms between 1609 and 1614, more than 300,000 Moriscos gave rise to provisional and definitive settlements in the Mediterranean basin. The author intends to shed light on the dispersion of this minority with the aim of making their tragic story dialogue with some categories debated by the social sciences: refugees, diaspora, identity, foreigners, mobility and translocality. With their complex and particular political situation, the Italian princedoms and kingdoms of the 17th century are the chosen laboratory to explain some theses and illustrate the fate of an ethnic group already judged by the Spanish Monarchs to be composed of “dangerous Crypto-Muslims”
