Cinema Spectatorship in the African Diaspora. This article explores the birth of cinema spectatorship among audiences in the African diaspora. It demonstrates that in the first decades of the twentieth century peoples of color in Africa, North America, and the Caribbean embraced the new medium of the cinema in remarkably similar and surprising ways. The commonalities of this experience reflect the shared challenges and opportunities facing black peoples throughout the world during this era of expanding colonial authority and racial segregation
