A new avenue for theology has been formed by combining the postliberal view of religion (the cultural-linguistic system of the believing community) with the perspectives of CDA, leading to critical postliberalism (CP). CDA-focused research has revealed the existence of a basic (Ri —R2) dialectic, and of two opposing social cognitions, within the discourse of UK church lfe. At an ecclesial level this has helped to point towards ecumenical models based more on a complex system than on 'Platonic wholeness' models. At a theological level the strength of CP analysis can be further appreciated by reference to biblical texts and especially to scriptural accounts of main events in the life of Christ. The method can also be used to address (in positive terms) the 'creole' nature of a major US religious discourse, as well as nuances, perceived in terms of 'grammar' and 'constraint', in the more (RIA) and less (RIB) conservative brands of UK RI
