This commentary reviews the scholarly contributions of the several authors to the pre-history of industrial research, a subject that has been largely ignored in previous works in the field. While finding much to approve in all of the contributions, the commentator objects to the use of the word “entrepreneur” to describe those innovators who develop new academic institutions
