Hopes for a fruitful interdisciplinary undertaking are seldom borne out, despite the near universal conviction of their usefulness. But since such a belief is rarely supported by the critical examination of its underlying assumptions, some brief remarks are appropriate. Above all, there is the problem of the disciplinary nature of our knowledge, which actually contradicts rather than buttresses the expectations of an interdisciplinary pay-off. Precisely because all understanding is based on certain “bounds of sense” the disciplines determine what is a question, what can be said, the notion that there is a point from which things can be seen as “they actually are”—is more a pious hope than a realistic expectation. This situation perhaps explains why so many “interdisciplinary” projects are just the result of personal networks. Knowing someone in sociology and another in law or international relations (IR) and, “liking them” (precisely because they are no threat to one's own the professional turf) seems to hold out the promise of an interesting conversation. It is, however, seldom clear whether on those occasions one talks at rather than with each other. But never mind! Like in an old Judy Garland movie where the teen-agers who lack money decide to finance it by putting on a “show,” the script seems rather similar. So it goes: “I do the costumes,” Nick says, continuing with his orders: “You, Bill, put together the stage in my cousin's barn! Bob can do the music, Emily sells the tickets and does the posters, Jessica does the costumes, and Judy does the song and dance with Dave and Rose.” And since all of them are, of course, simply “fabulous,” the show is a huge success and everyone can ride into the sunset with some fame and money to boot
