On 10 September 1952, the State of Israel and the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) signed a reparations agreement. During the year that preceded the agreement, Israel bore witness to a major struggle surrounding this issue in the public sphere and the political arena. This article analyzes the many different intertwining aspects of this public-political struggle. It assesses the nature of the two camps that took part in the struggle: the advocates of negotiations with Germany, or the “pro-negotiation” camp, and the opponents of negotiations, or the “anti-negotiation” camp; it reviews the different kinds of actions taken by the rival camps; and considers the manifold arguments they embraced in support of their respective positions in the dispute
