Realist theory in international relations states that a struggle for power is an inevitable characteristic of the battle for supremacy between an existing hegemon and an ascending challenger.1 British scholar Edward H. Carr goes so far as to recognize the ‘peaceful transition problem’ as a core international relations dilemma.2 However, one must maintain a cautious attitude towards such views, since they tend to provide arbitrary predictions regarding conflict.3 In recent history, the peaceful power transfer between Great Britain and the United States offers a completely different example. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the United States steadily ascended to replace Great Britain as the world's largest economy. Its emergence presented a grave threat to the interests of the British Empire in the Americas, and the dominant position of the Royal Navy in the Atlantic. War between the hegemon and the challenger seemed on the verge of breaking out
