Since 2007, the “Landscape & Perception” project, under the auspices of the Royal College of Art, has undertaken a series of field visits to Preseli and surrounding landscapes in southwest Wales conducting audio and visual mapping activities. On some of those field sessions, part of the research focused on the rocks along the Carn Menyn ridge, a claimed main source area of the Stonehenge bluestones in the Preseli hills. The specific interest was to test to see if there were lithophones (naturally musical or ringing rocks) present on the ridge, and if so, to digitally record a sample of them and to make a preliminary assessment of their incidence and distribution at the location. Those findings are presented in this note.(This note is adapted from the official report for the Royal College of Art, which also formed the basis of a presentation given at the Theoretical Archaeology Group conference at the University of Bristol in December 2010.)
